Who Should Treat Your Veins In Houston, TX?

Who Should Treat Your Veins In Houston, TX?

I’m often asked what type of specialist should someone choose to evaluate and treat his or her veins?

The problem is that finding the right specialist to evaluate and treat varicose veins in Houston can be very confusing. Because of the available technology and the fact that vein surgery is now primarily preformed in the office, you have a lot of medical professionals that range from radiologists to even cardiologists, that consider themselves vein experts, even though they had no formal fellowship or residency training in the treatment of vein disorders. But the good news is, that it doesn’t have to be difficult if you know the right questions to ask.

Treatment of veins is part of the vascular surgery curriculum, thus vascular surgeons are the only medical specialty formally trained in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disorders.

I’d like to give you a few tips to finding the right vein specialist.

  1. You want to make sure that you are choosing a professional that has the training and education that can provide expert care. Only be evaluated by a board certified vascular surgeon. Because a board certified vascular surgeon has the appropriate credentials to evaluate and treat patients with vein disease.
  2. Is the person evaluating you, the person who will also be treating you?

If the operating surgeon is not the person performing your vein assessment, then you are standing in a “Vein Mill” or a “Vein-In-The-Box” vein clinic. This is assembly line medicine at it’s worst. Someone evaluates you, someone else operates on you, and another person sees you for follow up. It’s even worse if one or more of them aren’t even physicians.

  1. Don’t fall for the “free consultation.” The free consult is a ploy used by shoddy vein clinics to get patients into the office. You will meet with someone who may or may not be a physician and then are told that that you will need to return for an ultrasound. You or your insurance will be billed for the ultrasound, and you will then be told that you will need to come back a third time to review the results. When you go to a reputable vein clinic, a board certified vascular surgeon will evaluate you. If an ultrasound is indicated, it will be performed at the time of your initial consultation, so you will know you the results immediately, and treatment options can be discussed. This allows you to make one visit instead of three. Since your time is valuable, the “free consult,” isn’t really free after all.
  1. Ask your primary or family physician who they would have treat their veins.
