Is Your Vein Doctor Credentialed In Vascular Ultrasound?

Is Your Vein Doctor Credentialed In Vascular Ultrasound?

This is the information age and it’s all about credentials.

Dr. Eugene Strandness, a vascular surgeon, developed vascular ultrasound. And although the venous ultrasound has become indispensible in evaluating and treating patients with venous disease, doctors aren’t born with knowledge on performing and interpreting venous ultrasound. Fortunately, the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exists to promote quality control and patient safety through the certification and continued competency of ultrasound professionals.

The ARDMS has a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification for anyone, including physicians, who perform ultrasound examinations or procedures. It also has a Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) certification for physicians who interpret ultrasound examinations.

If a physician is going to perform the venous ultrasound, and they should, as venous ultrasound has become an extension of the physical exam, it is imperative that they demonstrate competence. This competence is demonstrated by passing the RVT exam. If the physician has a technologist performing the exam, then it is imperative, that the physician has the RPVI certification. No one, including vascular surgeons or radiologists, is exempt from needing to demonstrate this certification.

When choosing a vein center, make sure the website specifically states RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) and RPVI (Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation) before you schedule an appointment.

Because most vein procedures can be performed in an office setting, many different types of medical specialists are claiming to be vein specialists. Vascular surgery, as the name implies, is clearly the most appropriate. The ideal vein center is one in which the physician is a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon, who also is certified as a Registered Vascular Technologist, and also has the Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation certification.

If you’ve already been evaluated, and someone other than a vascular surgeon, or if the person you saw is lacking in ultrasound credentials, call us today to schedule your consultation for a second opinion. You owe it to yourself to be seen by a physician who demonstrates the highest level of competency in their field.

Don’t just take our word for it; trust the American Board of Medical Specialists and the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
