Varicose Veins & Pregnancy
Hi, I’m Mike Bardwil. I am founder of Texas Vein and Cosmetic Specialists. I’m a vascular surgeon in Houston, Texas, boarded in both general and vascular surgery. And I’ve been practicing surgery now for 25 years.
Do varicose veins from pregnancy disappear after the pregnancy? Varicose veins following pregnancy will often times improve significantly. And on occasion, they may disappear completely. Usually you’ll get improvement without disappearance. The stimulus for the varicose veins is thought to be high estrogen levels, which occurs early on in the pregnancy and can continue during the pregnancy. The weight gain during pregnancy probably doesn’t help matters.
Following the delivery, once the person is able to re-establish their more normal hormone levels, and their more normal body weight, the veins will improve. Although it’s okay to evaluate patients shortly after pregnancy, it’s best to wait probably three to four months prior to instituting treatment to allow maximum improvement and reevaluation to determine the extent of the varicosities and whether treatment is actually indicated.
