Why Have Your Veins Treated By A Board Certified Vascular Surgeon

Diseases are often classified as medical diseases and surgical diseases. Medical diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypothyroidism are treated with medication. Diseases such as appendicitis, gallbladder disease, and varicose veins are considered surgical diseases because they are treated with surgery. There are no radiologic diseases. Radiologists assist the physician by interpreting x-rays, and sometimes performing procedures using x-ray guidance when the physician orders such procedures. They usually don’t have hospital admitting privileges and don’t manage patients themselves. Hospitals require surgical backup when radiologists perform invasive vascular procedures in a hospital setting. So you have varicose veins, but does that really require a vascular surgeon? The answer is yes, because most of the treatments involve minimally invasive surgical procedures.

All of the newer methods to treat venous disease are less invasive surgical procedures, and while most can be performed in a surgeon’s office, they are still surgical procedures.

Proper treatment of vein problems requires clinical judgment. You owe it to yourself to be seen by a surgeon who demonstrates the highest level of competency in his or her field. Venous insufficiency is a surgical disease, and vascular surgery is the surgical specialty uniquely qualified to treat patients with venous disease. In truth, when it comes to treating any kind of vein problem, no physician is held to a higher standard than a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon.
